SUMMARY:Irrigation Improvement Web Series
DESCRIPTION:Butte Conservation District\, Belle Fourche River Watershed Partnership\, and the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies have developed a web series on improving irrigation in the Belle Fourche Watershed. This series will host industry leaders\, conservation experts\, and producer panels to highlight irrigation improvements in the irrigation district. \nThursday March 25th 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \n\nNRCS representatives will discuss cost share opportunities for pivots and irrigation pipeline\nBFID discussing regulations when converting from flood to center pivot\nLocal pivot dealers will discuss their products and services\n\nThursday April 22nd 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm \n\nValerie Riter NRCS Area Agronomist will discuss plant water demands in different growth stages\nKent Cooley NRCS Area Soil Scientist will discuss water movement in soils and the challenges of irrigating clay soils\nDave Ollila with the SD Soil Health Coalition will discuss improving soil health under pivots\nProducer panel on the benefits of increasing soil health under pivots\n\nThursday May 20th 7:00 pm – 8:00pm \n\nAlex Roeber with DENR funding pivots with 319 funds\nA variety of moisture sensor companies will discuss their products and their benefits\nProducer panel discussing the benefits of moisture sensors and improving yields\n\nIrrigation Project Tour TBD in June/July \nAll Sessions will be hosted virtually on Zoom and accessible both online and by telephone. \nTo register and receive call in information contact: Jennifer Lutze at Jennifer.Lutze@usda.gov or 1-760-920-1196. \nOrganizers of this event are not endorsing any of the companies during this series. SUMMARY:Landowner Prescribed Fire Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Workshops are 1-day events.  Landowners can choose to attend either day May 25th or May 26th. The workshops are from 9 am to 5 pm and will be held at the SDSU Oak Lake Field Station in Astoria\, SD.  Due to Covid restrictions\, all students must pre-register (no walk ins). All food and drink will be the responsibility of the student. \nFocus of the workshops will be to instruct landowners and others on prescribed fire planning and implementation and will cover everything from preparing a written burn plan to preparing the fire unit to implementing the fire in a safe and effective manner. Training will include live fire and equipment demonstrations. Key concepts will be human and equipment resources\, timing\, objectives\, communications\, and SAFETY. \nThis class will offer no specific certifications\, rather it is an opportunity to simply learn core lessons that apply to conducting save grassland fires. \nRegistration fee:  Free to SD Grassland Coalition member\, $35 for non-members (includes an annual membership for 2021). You can purchase your SD Grassland Coalition Membership at https://sdgrass.org/join-sdgc/ \nRegister by contacting Jan Rounds at the Watertown SD\, SDSU Regional Extension Center.  janice.rounds@sdstate.edu or call her at 605-882-5140
