SUMMARY:Intro to Holistic Management Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Creating Resilience with Holistic Management \nJune1-4\, 2021\, at Niobrara Lodge in Valentine\, Neb. \nThe key to creating resiliency in any ranch operation is three fold: You must have the skills and knowledge to consistently create a true profit; you must be able manage livestock in a manner that regenerates healthy soils and plant communities; and you must empower a dynamic ranch team. This hands-on seminar will improve your skills in all three facets by introducing you to Holistic Management\, a planning process designed to support ranchers and farmers in their everyday decision-making. \n\nImprove Profitability\nImprove the Health of Your Land\nImprove the Health of Your Animals\nImprove Your Quality of Life\nImprove your ability to make Good Decisions\n\nLearn how to: \n• Develop a business plan based on the trinity of management\n• More effectively harvest the grass in your pastures thru proper grazing management\n• Control livestock with cost effective fencing\, well designed water improvements\, and low stress livestock handling\n• Match livestock to their environment and capitalize on their natural attributes\n• Reduce (stop) the overgrazing and improve the beneficial gardening they can do\n• Plan for a profit in any livestock market\n• Market your livestock and other products\n• Empower a management team that is creative and flexible\n• Create wildlife habitat and abundant feed through planned grazing\n• Use Holistic Management® to make financially\, ecologically\, and socially sound decisions \nWhat you will gain: \n• Increased profitability\n• Increased productivity from the land so you can sustain higher stocking rates of live-stock and other wildlife\n• Decreased weeds\, blowouts\, brush–cedar encroachment\, erosion and other land management problems\n• Greater returns from investments in land and livestock\n• Decrease the need for supplementation while simultaneously maintaining healthier herds\n• Protect the land base\, which is the biggest investment for most operations\n• A management team that is on the same page when decisions are made. \nAbout the instructor: \nRoland Kroos\, a Certified Educator with HMI will be teaching this seminar. Roland began his career working in the Nebraska sandhills back in 1978 for the NRCS. He was instrumental in bringing Allan Savory to Nebraska in the mid 80’s and helped many ranchers get started in practicing Holistic Management. Roland received his training and worked alongside Allan Savory for 8 years\, the founder of Holistic Management®. \nRoland’s enthusiasm and deep thinking will challenge your paradigms\, yet help you develop confidence in holistic decision-making. Roland has hands on experience in ranch/farm management and will share real-life examples of Holistic Management in Action. \nWith weather cooperating\, Roland plans to teach portions of this seminar outside. During this seminar\, we hope to visit 1-2 ranches that are practicing holistic management. Details are still being worked out. Roland also plans to have several ranchers who have been practicing HM for more than 20 years share their experiences. \nFor Registration Information please contact:\nTy Walker\nSandhills Stewards coordinator\nty@sandhillstaskforce.org\n(308) 764-7082 (text or call) \nRegistration form link: https://sdgrass.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Holistic-Management-Seminar-Registration.pdf \nThe Sandhills Task Force will be contributing half of the tuition cost for each attendee allowing for the reduced price of $350 per student\, and only $100 for all additional attendees from the same business. \nRegistration Deadline: May 14\, 2021 \nThe seminar will run Tuesday through Friday. To allow local ranchers to tend to their livestock\, this seminar will be taught from 10:00am to 5:00pm each day. Active involvement in all four days is essential to completely understand and practice the concepts. Once your registration is received\, you will be sent details about the seminar and how best to prepare for it. \n

SUMMARY:Soil Day & Rangeland Day
DESCRIPTION:When: June 2\, 2021\nWhere: Murdo\, SD\, and Redfield\, SD\nDue to COVID-19 and other safety concerns\, several changes will be happening to Rangeland and Soils Days this summer. \nThe event will focus solely on the Go-Getter (14-to-18-year-old) division. The Go-Getters will judge habitat suitability for cattle and grouse\, in addition to plant identification and morphology. New Wrangler (8-to-10-year-old) and Wrangler (11-to-13-year-old) divisions will not be held in 2021. There will be no student talks or displays this year. These aspects of Rangeland and Soils Days will return in 2022. \nDue to these changes\, the event will be one day\, June 2\, and will be held in two locations — Murdo and Redfield. Registration will be $5 per individual. \n“Go-Getters can come as an individual or as a team of three-to-four members from the county 4-H program or FFA chapter\,” says Krista Ehlert\, Assistant Professor and South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension Range Specialist. “The top Go-Getter range team and the top Go-Getter soils team in 4-H from each event location will represent South Dakota at the National Land and Range Judging Contest held in May of the following year (2022) in Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma.” \nSince South Dakota hasn’t sent any Go-Getters to nationals in the past two years due to COVID-19\, Ehlert says the state will send two 4-H range teams and two 4-H soils teams for the National 2022 competition. \nThe event in Murdo will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. CST at the Murdo Rodeo Arena\, with participants departing for the site at 9 a.m. To register for Murdo\, please pay by check to: Jones County Conservation District and mail to P.O. Box 298\, Murdo\, South Dakota 57559. For questions about location details at the Murdo event\, contact Valerie Feddersen at 605-530-2020\, and for contest details\, contact Emily Helms at 605-570-2180. \nThe event in Redfield will start with registration at noon CST in the basement of the Spink County Court House\, with departure for the site at 12:30 p.m. If you are participating in Redfield\, please pay by check to Spink County Conservation District and mail to 628 Second St. SW.\, Redfield\, South Dakota 57469. For questions about the Redfield event\, contact Lance Howe at 605-460-0846. \nNo meals will be provided at either location\, however there will be a short awards presentation at the end of the judging contests. \n
